Visit the underground Cisterns dating to Byzantine times. Walk through Hagia Sophia, which was the largest church in Christendom for 1000 years, built by Justinian (532 -537 A.D.). The church has 107 columns; fossil imbedded white marble floors, and beautiful glass mosaics. Enjoy the aroma of cinnamon, cloves, thyme, and other exotic spices as you explore the Grand Bazaar. Over 4000 shops sell everything from herbs to gold. This afternoon you will fly to Izmir. Dinner & Overnight in Izmir. DAY 4 Visit Pergamum, one of the seven churches mentioned in Revelation (Rev. 2:12). It displeased the Lord because it tolerated the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which Christ hated (Rev. 2:13-17). The fabled Acropolis towers 1,000 feet above the town and commands a spectacular panorama. As you pass through the Royal Gates, you will enter one of the great centers of classic Greek culture. You will see the foundations of the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Athena, and the ruins of the library, which once held 200,000 parchment volumes. You will see the remains of the Temple of Trajan, the Grand Theatre, the gymnasium, and the health center (Aesclepion). Visit Thyatira, once a busy trading center, home to Lydia, the “seller of purple” (Acts 16). Today, it is famous for Persian rugs. Thyatira, one of the Seven Churches mentioned in Revelation, tolerated the false prophetess, Jezebel (Rev. 1:11; 2:18-29). Dinner & overnight in Izmir. DAY 5 Visit the site of Philadelphia, also one of the Seven Churches of Revelation (Rev. 3:7-13). Christ told those who overcame that He would write upon them “the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is New Jerusalem.” (Rev. 3: 12) Today, not much is left to mark the spot. You will see an ancient wall and the remains of a Byzantine basilica. Travel to Sardis, another of the Seven Churches of Revelation. You will be impressed by the massive scale of the Temple of Artemis, the white marble Royal Road, the gymnasium, and the synagogue. The third-largest city in modern Turkiye is Izmir, long a center for Jewish and Christian communities. In Paul’s day, the town was known as Smyrna. It was also one of the Seven Churches of Revelation (Rev. 2:8-11). You will see the agora, the colonnaded commercial center where Roman statues can still be seen. Famous as the receiver of Paul’s Letter to the Colossians, the town of Colossae has fallen into obscurity. While you can still see traces of the theatre, the Necropolis, and the church, the ancient city is mostly indistinguishable ruins. Dinner & overnight in Pamukkale. DAY 6 Hierapolis is blessed by hot mineral springs and some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in Asia Minor. Paul mentions Hierapolis in his Letter to the Colossians in saluting Epaphras, a fellow laborer, for his love of the brethren there (Colossians 4:13). The ruins cover more than a mile. You will see the impressive amphitheater with seats still in perfect condition. You will see the City Gates, column-lined streets, and arches, which have stood through time and earthquakes. Today, the area is known as Pamukkale, meaning “Cotton Castle,” named for the limestone-laden hot springs which cascade from one white-edged terrace pool to the next. The Christians of Laodicea, one of the Seven Churches (Rev. 3:14-22), were chastised for being lukewarm, “You are neither cold nor hot” (Rev. 3:15), and for being too comfortable incorporating pagan and Christian beliefs. In the famous scripture from Revelation (3:20-21), Jesus says to the Laodicean church: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock...” Today, there are many acres of ruins to see, including the stadium and columned streets. Visit the excavations at Miletus, where Paul bid farewell to the elders of the church at Ephesus at the end of his Third Missionary Journey (Acts 20). Dinner & overnight in Kusadasi. DAY 7 Ephesus is one of the Seven Churches of Revelation (Rev. 1:11). In ancient days, Ephesus was a bustling port town of 250,000, graced with wide, colonnade-bordered streets. The Temple of Artemis was declared one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Today, only a single column remains to mark the site. You will visit the Basilica of St. John, the traditional site of his grave. From the basilica, enjoy a commanding view of the area. You will visit the Museum of Ephesus for an up-close look at artifacts from the ancient city. You will have time to explore this powerful city on your own and recreate some of the footsteps of Paul. DAY 4 THURSDAY Pompei, Minturno, Foro Appio After breakfast, we depart for Pompeii, where we will be joined by our local guide to have an archeological journey through the ancient city. Buried under a layer of ashes and pyroclastic flow by a sudden eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE, the city shows us Roman life frozen in time. It is through understanding the context of this ime period that we can understand Paul’s preaching. People who walked these streets were of the generation of the early apostles,t and Paul’s message had reached there long before the eruption. Paul walked many a Roman city that looked as Pompeii does, and the imagery of the Epistles to those cities is nowhere more easily pictured. We will visit houses, shops, temples, squares, streets and even some of the darker quarters of the city, such as the “Lupanare” (house of prostitutes) and the “Suburbane Thermae“ (with its graphic frescos). As we make our way north, we will rejoin the ancient Appian roadway traveled by Paul, stopping at the partially restored ruins of the Roman village of Minturno. A quiet site, the open plan of the site, together with the lack of other crowds will allow us to reflect on the implications of understanding the setting and people of these suburban areas to ministry of Paul and the Apostles. We continue on for our overnight in Foro Appio in the nearby “Mansio Hotel” A mansio was an official stopping place along a Roman road maintained by the central government for the use of officials and those on official business whilst travelling. In such a place, Paul could have hosted the early believers and drawn some encouragement. Our evening will include a unique experience with a dinner based on some ancient traditional Roman recipes. DAY 5 FRIDAY Foro Appio, Romanfora, Palatine, Colosseo, San Clemente, St. Prisca After a hearty breakfast, we will depart Foro Appio and make our way to the Eternal City. Following some of the high points of Roman history, we will address “how Romans told their story” in “Pompa Processions” and architecture like that of Emperor Trajan’s Column, a jewel of architecture and sculpture. We will begin our walking tour along the Via dei Fori Imperiali and observe the ruins of the Imperial center of Rome. Other important edifices, like the Forum of Trajan, the biggest and most splendid of markets of its time, became the forerunners of our modern malls and commercial complexes. They offered to the Roman citizen the full array of goods of the Roman world. We will view the Capitoline Hill, the former political and religious center of the town, which today is the seat of the Municipality of Rome. The stairway opens to the Piazza del Campidoglio, amagnificent result of a project by Michelangelo, built around a copy of the most famous equestrian statue world, that of the stoic Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Behind Piazza del Campidoglio a natural terrace will offer us the best panoramic view of the valley of the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. From the Forum we can view the Palatine Hill. Here is the home of the mythical Remus and Romulus who is said to have founded the town in the year 753 BCE. We will view the Mammertime Prison and our visit to the Arch of Constantine, will remind us of the victory of the emperor over Maxentius in the 4th century CE that gave rise to the legalization and later adoption of Christianity. Our visit to the city center will end at the Colosseum, an everlasting symbol of the greatness of Rome and the stage for the historical fights of the gladiators where thousands of people and animals perished. After a break for lunch, we will visit the Basilica of San Clemente. Clement was an early Roman convert to Christ, and we will take this opportunity to talk about the people that were responding to the first wave of the Gospel in Rome. We will be reminded of the early companions of Paul, traveling to the Aventine Hill to the traditional home of Priscillla and Aquila, (based on a C5th CE document) now located below the Church of Santa Prisca. After our visit, we will make our way to our hotel for dinner and overnight. DAY 6 SATURDAY Vatican Museums, St. Peter's Basilica, Rome Sights This morning we will be overwhelmed by the art and beauty found in our visit the Vatican Museums. Your guide will show you the Apartments of Julius II, splendidly decorated by Raphael and his assistants, and then the Sistine Chapel, where you will admire one of the highest masterpieces of art: the Genesis and the Last Judgment by Michelangelo, that have gained their original splendor after the latest restorations. Leaving the Sistine Chapel and going down the Royal Stairway, projected by Bernini, the guide will conduct you to the Basilica of St. Peter which gathers inside 2000 years of history and famous works of art such as the Pieta by Michelangelo. The visit ends at St Peter’s Square. This afternoon we enjoy some leisure time…. Have lunch at Trevi Fountain, walk on Condotti Street in the fashion district of Spanish Steps, visit Piazza Navona or the Panteon… Return to hotel to relax before a Farewell dinner. DAY 7 SUNDAY San Paola Alla Regola, Tres Tabernaes, Saint Paul's Outside the Walls With yesterday’s sketch of the Roman world and its imperial center in mind, we begin the day following the steps of St. Paul, recalling both his first and second visits to the city, as well as setting the execution in both geography and history. We will begin our visit the Insula di San Paolo alla Regola, an important possible place for Paul’s first visit and house arrest in about 62 CE. This place references the early belief that “Paul took a rented horreum” where he could likely invite, teach and comfort the small but growing Christian community. From this possible site of Paul’s outreach we will travel to the “Abbey of the Three Fountains” – the place of Paul’s martyrdom. We journey next to the Basilica of “St. Paul Outside the Walls” on the Via Ostiense, the resting place for the body of Paul. After recalling the work of the Apostle Paul, we will continue to the northern end of the ancient Via Appia, to visit the Catacombs of Santa Domitilla. Early Christian art and history are preserved below ground at these early burial and memorial places, with some markings suggesting celebration of the anniversaries of Christian martyrs (following similar Roman customs). We will board our bus and time allowing continue our Roman visit at Basilica of San John di Lateran, which became among the most important Christians Churches of Rome. When Constantine opened the Roman world to Christianity, his apparent conversion was symbolized by the donation of a significant family property for this Basilica. The important Lateran Baptistery reminds us of the many early converts to the faith, and the process of moving it from a rogue influence to a sponsored and ordered faith. Dinner and overnight at our hotel. DAY 8 MONDAY Rome, USA We will be taken to the airport for our flight home. We will cherish the memories of Paul the Apostles life that changed the course of man. Day by Day POST-TOUR: NORTHERN ITALY DAY 1 MONDAY Rome, Assisi, Florence This morning we will go through the Umbrian green hills covered in olive groves and vineyards to reach Assisi. Enjoy some time at leisure for an optional gondola ride or for shopping. Transfer to our hotel for dinner and overnight. DAY 4 THURSDAY Venice, Verona, Milan, Stresa This morning we begin a long, but wonderful day as we head to Verona. The first glimpse of the city is love at first sight. “There is no world without Verona walls” pens William Shakespeare, who has lent Verona fame and immortality with his tale of two star-crossed lovers, Romeo Montecchi (Montagu) and Juliet Capuleti (Capulet). Reboard our bus and continue to Milan, Italy’s fashion and business capital. Westminster Abbey is also the burial place of David Livingstone. We visit St Paul’s Cathedral, with its dome inspired by St. Peter’s in Rome. We visit the Tower of London, built in 1066 as a fortress for William the Conqueror, which has served for nearly 1000 years and view Buckingham Palace and other places of interest as we travel through the city. Remainder of the day is free for your private explorations of London. DAY 4 THURSDAY Stonehenge, Salisbury, Bath Today we leave London and head west for the mysterious stone circle, Stonehenge, dating back to 3200 B.C. Next, we come to Salisbury and its awe-inspiring cathedral, with the tallest surviving pre-1400 spire in the world. Here we recall the artisans and craftsmen who labored to construct amazing buildings for the worship and glory of God. In the Cathedral Chapter House, we view depictions of scenes from Genesis and Exodus, and see one of only four surviving copies of the Magna Carta. In the afternoon we visit Bath, where we view Bath Abbey, another beautiful and historic cathedral, and the Roman baths, constructed like the Roman bath houses we see in the Holy Land. We also visit the famous “Pump Room,” built in 1790, where 18th century socialites came to “take the waters” for their health. Here in Bath, Jane Austen wrote many of her famous novels about the manners and extravagances of Georgian society. DAY 5 FRIDAY Bath, Bristol, Oxford After a short drive from Bath, we come to the busy city of Bristol, home of William Penn, a Quaker and the founder of Pennsylvania. We will see the New Room, the first Methodist chapel, the home of Charles Wesley, and Hanham Mount, where John Wesley preached some of his open-air sermons in 1738. We will also view the famous orphanages established by George Mueller (now a technical college). In the afternoon we arrive at Oxford, where we’ll have a guided tour of the city and university, including Christ Church from which John Wesley graduated. We’ll visit the spot outside Balliol College where three heroes of the English Reformation (Latimer, Ridley and Cranmer) were burned at the stake. We’ll also view “The Kilns,” the home of C.S. Lewis. DAY 6 SATURDAY Oxford, Scrooby, Austerfield, Epworth, York Today we travel north into Nottinghamshire, stopping first at Scrooby, the “Birthplace of the Pilgrims.” Here, in 1606, dissatisfied with the corruption and lax nature of the Church of England, some religious separatists broke away from the church and its head, King James I, to commit themselves to a simpler way of life based on the teachings of the Bible. We also visit nearby Austerfield, home of William Bradford, America’s greatest Pilgrim Father. Eventually Bradford and Brewster, along with a company of fellow Pilgrims, set sail for America. Next, we travel to Epworth and the birthplace of the founders of Methodism. Samuel and Susanna Wesley lived in Epworth for 39 years, and raised here their 17 children, including John and Charles. We’ll visit their home, the Old Rectory, and the parish church where Samuel ministered. Next, we arrive at York where we will tour the majestic York Minster, which dates from 1220, and see other fascinating sights of this ancient city. DAY 7 SUNDAY York, Durham, Lindisfarne, Jedburgh, Edinburgh Driving north from York we come to Durham and view the ancient cathedral. Next, we have a photo stop at picturesque Lindisfarne, the “Holy Island,” where a monastery was established in 635 A.D., soon after Christianity came to Britain. Crossing the border into Scotland, we come to the lovely village of Jedburgh, and view the remains of its beautiful church, founded in 1108 by King David I of Scotland, and the home of Mary Queen of Scots. Next, we visit the remains of Dryburgh Abbey, beautifully nestled in a secluded loop of the River Tweed. Christianity was established here by missionaries in 600 A.D., and the abbey was built in 1150. Here we can view remarkably well-preserved glimpses of medieval monastic life. Dryburgh is the burial place of the well-known author, Sir Walter Scott. Then onto Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. DAY 8 MONDAY Edinburgh Today we tour the historic city of Edinburgh, home of the Scottish Reformation. We visit 900-year-old St Giles Church, “the birthplace of Presbyterianism,” where John Knox was minister for many years. We also visit John Knox’s home. At the top of the Royal Mile we come to Edinburgh Castle, a military fortress since 900 A.D., situated atop a volcanic crag. The oldest structure in the castle, tiny St. Margaret’s Chapel, was built ca 1100 A.D. It was in Edinburgh Castle that Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to King James VI of Scotland, who became King James I of England, uniting the crowns of England and Scotland. In 1611 James I authorized the English version of the Bible, now known as the “Authorized Version” or the “King James Version.” After our tour of the Castle we continue along the Royal Mile to Holyroodhouse, palace of Mary Queen of Scots. DAY 9 TUESDAY Edinburgh, St. Andrews This morning we drive across the Firth of Forth, past the picturesque fishing ports of Fifeshire, and on to St. Andrews on the northeast coast of Scotland. St. Andrew is the “patron saint” of Scotland, and the “Cross of St. Andrew” is the flag of Scotland. It was in St. Andrews that George Wishart, under whose ministry John Knox was converted, was burned at the stake for preaching the gospel. We will visit the remains of the cathedral, which was begun in 1160 and took over 150 years to complete. During the Scottish Reformation John Knox preached a fiery sermon in St. Andrews parish church, whereupon the congregation went immediately to the cathedral and destroyed many valuable objects and furniture, which they saw as relics of “popery.” We also view the ancient St. Andrews Castle, perched on a cliff overlooking the North Sea. We will also visit the most famous golf course in the world, “The Royal and Ancient.” DAY 10 WEDNESDAY Edinburgh, London, New York This morning we fly from Edinburgh to London, where we board our flight home. *The trip will take place in case of a group of 16 people * * The route, as well as the order of visiting places, may be changed due to quarantine restrictions, as well as for safety reasons or due to the weather, road repair work etc. Reviews
