After arrival at Wroclaw airport, you meet your tour escort and embark on your journey. Depending on your time of arrival, you may start with a short tour to get a feeling for this vibrant city. This evening, enjoy a delicious welcome dinner at a lovely local restaurant. Overnight in Wroclaw. (D)

Today, you will explore Wroclaw and visit an important place where Bonhoeffer grew up. Bonhoeffer was born in 1906; you will visit his place of birth and the monument at the Church of St. Elizabeth. Although Bonhoeffer stayed in Wroclaw only until age 6, his spirit is still present in the city in the quarter of the four confessions. His ideas inspired the Polish writer Tadeusz Różewicz. You will continue visiting the Aula Leopoldina, the Old Jewish Cemetery, and the cathedral before dinner. Overnight in Wroclaw. (B, D)

After breakfast, you will drive to Berlin, the city where Bonhoeffer spent most of his time. On the way, you will enjoy a boat trip on the river Spree through the forests of the Spreewald. You will have a stop at the beautiful original village of Lehde and time for enjoying the idyllic atmosphere. You will then proceed to drive to Berlin. Dinner and overnight in Berlin. (B, D)

After an early breakfast, go on a sightseeing tour of all the highlights Berlin has to offer and important places on the footsteps of Bonhoeffer. You will start at the Church St. Matthäus, where the ordination of Bonhoeffer took place. Visit the grand Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of union and peace, and the magnificent “Reichstag”, where the German government makes the most important decisions. Proceed to the boulevard “Unter den Linden” and visit the picturesque Museum Island, which marks Berlin’s historical center. One of the capital’s most famous buildings is located here, the Berlin Cathedral. The Humboldt University lies on the way. Here, Bonhoeffer studied for one semester and met Karl Barth. Both had a long friendship and influenced each other. Afterward, you will visit the Topography of Terror Documentation Center, which has an exhibition about the time in Berlin, 1933-1945. The last visit point of this day is the Bonhoeffer House. Dinner and overnight in Berlin. (B, D)

September 25 – Potsdam, Wittenberg

In the afternoon, you drive to nearby Potsdam, where you see the stunning Cecilienhof Palace, where the Potsdam Conference was held in 1945, and take in the charm of the Dutch Quarter with its unique architecture. Visit the Church of Peace, a symbol of reconciliation, and the City Palace, which houses the Senate of Brandenburg. Wander through the picturesque old city of Potsdam, including the Alter Markt, and marvel at the grandeur of the Neues Palais (New Palace). Proceed to the Wittenberg hotel for dinner and overnight. After breakfast, we visit St. Nicholas Church, the home of the faithful “Pray for Peace” Christians and the powerful force that transformed Germany’s East and West. We visit the magnificent St. Thomas Church, where Luther preached, and Johann Sebastian Bach performed and directed the famous St. Thomas Boys Choir. It was here that Schiller wrote his immortal “Ode to Joy,” later to be adopted as the principal theme of “Beethoven’s 9th Symphony” (which was also written in Leipzig). You will have a short drive to your next stop, the city of Eisleben, where Luther was born and died. Start the tour of Eisleben’s town center. Stops include the Church of St. Peter and Paul, St. Andrew’s Church, St. Anne’s Church, and the Old Town with its charming historical houses. Discover the houses where he took his first and his last breaths. In the afternoon, you make your way to Erfurt, the spiritual home of Martin Luther. It was in Erfurt that Luther obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1502 and a master’s in 1505. After being caught in a violent thunderstorm nearby, Luther here took the decisive step to turn to theology and the monastic life and took the vow to become a monk. Dinner and overnight in Erfurt. September 28 – Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Weimar, Erfurt

This morning, you will explore the former Buchenwald Concentration Camp and see the Bonhoeffer Commemorative Site. The memorial commemorates the Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Wehrmacht General Friedrich von Rabenau, and Wehrmacht Captain Ludwig Gehre, who were held in the detention cellar of the SS casern as “special prisoners” of the Main Security Office of the Reich Wittenberg. You continue to Erfurt. It is time to explore the city of Erfurt and its historic center on a guided walk. Marvel at the Merchants’ Bridge - the longest continuous bridge with inhabited buildings in Europe, the Luther Memorial, the Town Hall, and the Merchant’s Church. Explore the Fish Market, St. Mary’s Cathedral, and the ‘Anger’, the city’s central square. It was here, in this beautiful city, that Luther decided to become a monk. Visit the Augustinian Monastery, a place that shaped and taught the young Reformer for six years. Take a glimpse at the small “cell” where Luther lived during his stay in the monastery. Day 10
September 29 – Erfurt, Eisenach, Frankfurt Area

Continue on to Eisenach. Stroll the city of Eisenach and admire all its beautiful sights, such as the Luther House and St. George’s Church, where Luther preached while “on the run” and later, in 1685, Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized. Next is the Bach House, a museum housing an extensive collection of instruments from the 16th to 19th centuries and a permanent exhibition on the life and work of J.S. Bach. Here, we enjoy a musical performance of historical instruments. Then visit the UNESCO World Heritage site Wartburg Castle. Here, Luther found refuge during his exile and translated the New Testament from Greek to German. Take a look at the Spartan room he lived and worked in. Afterward, you drive from the east of Germany to the west of the area of Frankfurt for dinner and overnight. (B, D)

Day 9 - Cork, Cobh, Blarney
Depart England on your flight to Cork, Ireland. Our representatives will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your Irish bus as we head for Cobh. Here, you will visit the Heritage Center. From this port, between 1845 and 1860, that 2.5 million people sailed to America. If you had an ancestor who came from Ireland to America, chances are they departed from this very place. Find your family name on the archived passenger lists. You can enjoy the multimedia exhibition and the railway station that has been completely refurbished in the style of the era. Visit Blarney Castle and Blarney Woollen Mills Shop. At the Castle of Blarney you will see the fabled Blarney Stone. Legend says that those who kiss the stone acquire a gift of eloquence. Check into your Killareny area hotel for a two-night stay. (B, D)

Day 10 - Ring of Kerry, Waterville, Muckross House
Delight in some of the most spectacular scenery as you travel the Ring of Kerry. Pause at the seaside village of Waterville. Here Charlie Chaplin owned a summer home, and Payne Stewart was Club Captain of the local Golf Course. Visit the 19th century Muckross House. You will enjoy this magnificent Victorian mansion that is considered one of Ireland’s leading stately homes. You will experience the elegance of the day when you see the elegantly furnished rooms. Downstairs, however, reveals the working conditions of the servants employed in the house. (B, D)

Day 11 - Adare, Rock of Cashel, Dublin
Enjoy the beauty of the thatch roofed streets of Adare. The church here has a Norman Castle keep at it’s center. See the Rock of Cashel, the traditional seat of Irish kings. Here St. Patrick is thought to have converted the King of Munster. The present ruins are from structures built in the 12 and 13th Centuries, during the Norman era. Continue on to Dublin for dinner and your two-night stay. (B, D)

Day 12 - Dublin
We begin our journey this morning with a stop at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The church was transitioned from a Catholic church to the Church of Ireland over the centuries. Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels and a critic of British rule was a pastor here. John Wesley spoke and administered communion here on one of his numerous visits to Ireland. Take a walking tour of Trinity College. Founded by Queen Elizabeth I in 1592, it is the oldest college in Ireland. We’ll visit the Old Library here and see the Book of Kells, an ornately illustrated Bible produced by Celtic Monks around 800 AD. Enjoy lunch at the Church, a pub that was originally a church Wesley preached at on his first visit to Ireland. Enjoy an afternoon to explore and shop on your own as you walk along the Liffey River or visit the various museums. (B, D)

Say farewell to Ireland this morning as you return home with memories of the people and places of England and Ireland!
