Welcome to Scotland! This morning, you'll walk the streets of Perth to St. John's Kirk. John Knox spoke here with a sermon against "idolatry" that helped spark the grassroots level of the Reformation. Drive to Stirling, where we will stop at the Old Bridge, the site of the battle between William Wallace and the Scots against the British. Look out across Scotland from Abbey Craig and the Wallace Monument. Built to commemorate the Scottish hero in 1869, it is said Wallace watched the armies of King Edward I of England gathering from this spot before the Battle of Stirling. You’ll also visit Stirling Castle, one of the best-preserved castles in Scotland. Dinner and overnight in Stirling. (D)

Start your morning with a visit to the Church of the Holy Rude, founded in 1129. King James VI was crowned here in 1567. Stop at the monument and visitor's center at Bannockburn, the site of the pivotal battle in the Scottish Wars of Independence in 1314. Depart Stirling and continue to Loch Lomond. Stop at Luss for a photo stop. Continue to the village of Glencoe, site of the massacre of the Clan MacDonald by forces of King William II. Then, travel to Fort William, nestled on the shores of Loch Linnhe. Dinner and overnight in Fort William. (B, D)

Depart Fort William and continue to visit Urquhart Castle, which saw great conflict during its 500 years as a medieval fortress. Keep your eyes out for ‘Nessie’ as you take a relaxing afternoon boat ride on Loch Ness. Enjoy a walking tour of the beautiful and historic city of Inverness, a source of inspiration for Macbeth, as well as the Inverness Castle and Cathedral. Dinner and overnight in Inverness. (B, D)

Visit Culloden, the site of the last battle fought on the British mainland. It was here that the dreams of Bonnie Prince Charlie to capture the British Crown were shattered. Next, visit the historic Kirk of St. Nicholas, also known as ‘the mither kirk’ (mother church) of the city. Learn the history of commerce and politics in Aberdeen. Evening and overnight in Aberdeen. Explore the remains of Scotland’s largest and most magnificent medieval church. Even in its ruined state, the cathedral remains a prominent landmark, visible from the sea. Continue on your journey to Dunfermline Cathedral, a Church of Scotland Parish Church. In 2002, the congregation had 806 members. The church occupies the site of the ancient chancel and transepts of a large medieval Benedictine abbey, which was sacked in 1560 during the Scottish Reformation and permitted to fall into disrepair. Dunfermline Abbey remains one of Scotland's most important cultural sites. Dinner and overnight in Edinburgh. (B, D)

Continue the tour of the Palace and explore its close associations with some of Scotland’s best-known historic figures, such as Mary, Queen of Scots, and Bonnie Prince Charlie. This morning on your journey, visit Rosslyn Chapel, founded on a small hill above Roslin Glen as a Catholic church in 1446. Then, walk the halls of the John Knox House, a historic home in Edinburgh, Scotland, reputed to have been owned and lived in by Protestant Reformer John Knox during the 16th century. Enjoy a visit to the Scottish Museum. Afterward, make your way to the Elephant House, where author JK Rowling first imagined and wrote the Harry Potter series. Then visit the statue of Greyfriars Bobby located next to the Elephant House, and hear a heartwarming story of loyalty about a dog and his master. Overnight in Edinburgh. Dinner on your own. (B)

Malta Pre-Tour
October 7 (TH) – Depart from Home
Make your way to your local airport, where you will board your overnight flight(s).
October 8 (FR) – Arrive in Malta
Upon arrival, collect your luggage and proceed to the arrival hall, where you will be met by a tour guide and/or driver and transferred to your hotel. Your guide will share the Maltese Islands’ rich history of St. Paul and Christianity, and you will attend Mass at a local church before dinner at your hotel.

October 9 (SA) – The Three Cities
After breakfast at your hotel, depart for a full-day guided excursion to the Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Cospicua, and Senglea. In 1530, the Knights of St. John settled here on the east coast in the creeks of Grand Harbor. Next, see the Miraculous Statue of Jesus Christ the Redeemer in the Oratory of the Basilica, dedicated to the Virgin Mary's birth in Senglea. Later, take a typical harbor boat tour from Vittoriosa across the Grand Harbor to Valletta and see its waterfront. You will also see St. John’s Co-Cathedral and Museum in Valletta. Visit the Oratory, which houses the famous Caravaggio paintings. Enjoy dinner and a restful overnight.

October 10 (SU) – Mellieha & Gozo
After breakfast at your hotel, depart for Gozo, a sister island of Malta. Here you’ll visit the Mellieha Sanctuary of Our Lady, a Marian Shrine. Pope John Paul II blessed the Sanctuary during his visit to Malta in 1990. You will be able to enjoy a picturesque view of the Valley of Our Lady, Mellieha Bay, Comino, and Gozo. Later, see Munxar Parish Church, a Baroque-style building dedicated to St. Paul; the Gozo Cathedral of the Assumption; and St. George’s Basilica, known as the golden church of the “Marble Basilica” of Gozo. The relics of St. Clement rest in the Baroque altar in the side chapel of St. Lazarus, which is one of eleven side chapels within the Basilica. Next, visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’Pinu, Malta’s most important pilgrimage site. The narrow rooms on either side of the altar are full of testaments to the local people’s belief in the intercession of Our Lady. Return by ferry to Malta.

October 11 (MO) – St. Paul’s Bay, Mosta, Mdina & Rabat
After breakfast at your hotel, another full day of touring awaits. See St. Paul’s Bay by boat, the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Museum in Mdina, the medieval walled city, the Bastions, St. Paul’s Catacombs, and St. Paul’s Grotto. St. Paul’s Grotto is said to be the place where St. Paul took refuge and prayed for three months while trying to convert the Maltese people to Christianity following his shipwreck around 60 AD. Pope John Paul II prayed in the grotto during his 1990 visit. Return to Malta for dinner and your last overnight. (B, D)
